Nurmijärvi's new street lighting control solution has paved the way for future development

The municipality of Nurmijärvi has upgraded its street lighting control solution, bringing significant improvements in network management, energy efficiency, and flexibility. This modern system not only meets today's needs but also provides the tools for future development – from more precise lighting control to enhanced safety.

The lighting network manager of the Municipality of Nurmijärvi Tero Asikainen from Insplan Oy describes 2024 a pivotal year in the management of the municipality's street lighting. The outdated control system was replaced with a modern solution that meets the demands for energy efficiency and flexibility. The new system was selected through an open tender process, with its implementation carried out by C2 SmartLight Oy in collaboration with their installation partner, N3M Oy.

The modern solution brought more comprehensive control
During the project, metering units were added to all control centers outside urban areas. This was not part of the original project plan but brought significant added value. “The decision proved to be the right one, as it greatly improves the management of the lighting network,” states Tero Asikainen. The metering units enable more precise monitoring of energy consumption and network performance, and the new system opens up entirely new savings opportunities that were not possible with the old system. C2 SmartLight's Sales Manager Jani Lind summarizes the importance of the upgrade: “The previous system had reached its maximum potential, but with the new control solution, the Municipality of Nurmijärvi can pursue more ambitious energy-saving goals.”

The Direction for the Future
The new control system is not just a solution for today’s needs but also a foundation for future development. For example, safety-related improvements are being considered, such as enhancing lighting along school routes in specific areas. Additionally, luminaire-specific control has emerged as a topic of discussion.

Nurmijärvi’s street and sports facility network includes approximately 12,450 luminaires, 30% of which already use led technology. Two years ago, a decision was made to equip all new led luminaires with Zhaga connectors. This enables luminaire-specific control to be easily implemented later, significantly increasing the system’s flexibility to meet future needs.

Tero Asikainen presents the opportunities offered by the new system to the technical committee, whose decisions will define the next steps in development. “Our system now enables possibilities that couldn’t even be considered with the old technology. The committee’s guidelines will shape how we leverage this potential moving forward,” Asikainen states.

Seamless Collaboration and Rapid Communication
The success of the project was rooted in smooth collaboration, where the speed and clarity of communication played a central role. Tero Asikainen emphasizes the importance of addressing all questions and challenges promptly during installations. “Quick and clear communication ensured that the work progressed without unnecessary delays. When every party receives the information they need on time, waiting times are avoided, and the project flows smoothly,” he explains. This approach proved to be crucial, as it enabled efficient scheduling and minimized unnecessary disruptions during installation work. “When collaboration works this well, project progress is not only swift but also predictable,” Asikainen concludes.

The Outcome Exceeded Expectations
The project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, even though significant additional work was carried out along the way. With the new system in place, the Municipality of Nurmijärvi now has the tools to further enhance energy efficiency in lighting and improve safety in critical areas.

“This project was one of the smoothest, despite its considerable scope, and the outcome exceeded all expectations,” says Tero Asikainen, who warmly recommends C2 SmartLight as a partner for similar projects.
