Trailblazer in Lighting – The Successful Collaboration Between the Municipality of Pyhtää and C2 SmartLight

The municipality of Pyhtää and C2 SmartLight have together created a versatile and innovative lighting system that combines safety, energy efficiency, and the strengthening of municipal identity. Pyhtää acts as a pioneer in the utilization of smart lighting, offering solutions that serve both residents and the goals of sustainable development.

The street lighting of the municipality of Pyhtää has undergone major changes in recent years. The collaboration began in 2015, and under the control of C2 SmartLight there are 42 lighting control cabinets, which manage a total of over 1,200 lighting points, about half of which are leds. Through innovative and open cooperation with C2 SmartLight, Pyhtää has succeeded in modernizing its lighting network and creating solutions that enhance safety, comfort, and energy efficiency. The property manager responsible for outdoor lighting in Pyhtää, Iikka Voutilainen says the collaboration has been a significant part of the municipality’s development.

With the help of C2 SmartLight’s control system, Pyhtää has achieved significant savings in energy costs and improved the functionality of lighting. “We get light exactly when and where it’s needed. It has brought not only economic savings but also safety for the residents,” Iikka states.

Forerunner in lighting solutions
One of the newest completed projects is the lighting on Malminsuontie. Malminsuontie serves as a gateway from the highway to the center of Pyhtää, and for its lighting, a solution was sought that is both functional and visually distinctive, and that supports the municipality’s brand.

“Through Sonepar, we found Fagerhult’s Opalume luminaire, which perfectly met our needs,” says Iikka Voutilainen. The luminaire features a normal downward-facing led light and RGBW lighting in the luminaire dome. “With C2 SmartLight’s system, we can easily change the colors, for example, to blue and white for Independence Day, rainbow colors for Pride, or to orange in accordance with Pyhtää’s brand,” Voutilainen continues.

The new lighting makes Malminsuontie a lively and inviting gateway, which brings out the municipality’s identity, celebrates themed days, and increases the comfort of the area.

But the Malminsuontie project is just one of many. Several innovative lighting solutions have been implemented in Pyhtää.

Pedestrian crossing lighting at the Huutjärvi road junction
One of the first C2 SmartWalk pedestrian crossing lighting solutions in Finland, which improves pedestrian safety and still works well.

Smart lighting on fitness trails with motion sensors
The lights turn on based on movement, providing lighting only when needed.

Insect-friendly lighting in the Kaunissaari area
A planned lighting solution that particularly considers biodiversity. The lighting will be implemented using 2200-kelvin warm-toned led lights, which minimize harmful effects on insects and other organisms. The luminaires are individually controlled, allowing lighting to be adjusted as needed in different areas.

Lighting for sports fields, rinks and playgrounds
Solutions implemented with C2 SmartPlay push-button control in the village center and Huutjärvi areas. The system enables easy and need-based control of lighting, for example during practices, games, and according to playground user needs.

Lighting for the new residential area of Sammalkallio
A smart lighting system covering the entire area, with all luminaires integrated into C2 SmartLight’s control. The luminaires are also individually controllable, allowing lighting to be adjusted according to the needs of different areas and situations.

Accessible path at Kärsäjärvi
Environmentally friendly bollard lights that shine only downward and preserve the local ecosystem. The luminaires are also individually controllable, allowing lighting to be adjusted as needed. Along the path, the lighting can be dimmer, while at the rest area the lighting is brighter.

Lighting and heating control solution for Motellinpuisto
A modern lighting solution, in which old luminaires are updated with led technology and Zhaga connectors. At the same time, heating for the accessible ramp is controlled to ensure accessibility year-round. The solution also supports events in the area by providing necessary event electricity and lighting.

Luminaire modernization project
A project planned for the village center area, where old luminaires are to be preserved and brought up to date. The project covers 36 luminaires, which will be renewed with led technology and Zhaga connectors. “We wanted to preserve the original luminaires for their historical look, but bring them into this century with energy-efficient solutions,” says Iikka Voutilainen.

Seasonal lighting control
The system enables the control of seasonal lighting, such as Christmas and winter lights, as needed and via remote connection. Lighting poles have sockets that can be controlled individually, meaning seasonal lighting is not dependent on the street lighting schedules. This solution eliminates the need for extension cord setups and enables a clean and safe implementation.

Electrical design
C2 SmartLight has also provided electrical and lighting design for the municipality of Pyhtää. “Previously, even though we had clearly stated our requirements, the designs were often incomplete or inaccurate,” says Iikka Voutilainen. “With C2 SmartLight, the design has been precise and aligned with our needs. They understand what is needed in a municipality and know how to implement it on a practical level.” This collaboration has brought smoothness and certainty to project implementation.

“These projects demonstrate how versatile lighting control solutions can be utilized and developed. In everything, the aim has been to find solutions that serve both the residents and the municipality’s long-term goals,” Iikka summarizes.

Continuous development and innovation
Pyhtää’s individual luminaire control offers significant possibilities for the future. “Individual control means that we can adjust lighting with the accuracy of a single luminaire according to needs. For example, in some areas the lighting can be dimmer, while in critical locations like pedestrian crossings or rest areas, the lighting can be kept brighter,” Iikka Voutilainen explains.

This technology also allows for rapid responses to changing conditions, such as weather variations or event needs. “In the future, individual luminaire control enables even more precise energy use and lighting optimization. It also provides the opportunity to benefit from electricity market demand response, allowing lighting to be adjusted based on the most affordable prices. This brings additional savings,” Iikka continues.

The collaboration between Pyhtää and C2 SmartLight continues with new projects and innovations. In the future, the goal is to develop lighting solutions that support sustainable development and smart energy use even further.

C2 SmartLight's Sales Manager Jani Lind says: “It is a pleasure to work with Pyhtää. Our cooperation works not only technically, but also on a personal level. They have the courage to try new things and develop even better solutions for their municipality. This partnership is proof of how lighting can be used to build a safer and more pleasant living environment – and how good team spirit helps move projects forward smoothly.”

Pyhtää lives up to its brand promise by being a trailblazer also in showing how municipal lighting can be more than just light – it can be part of the municipality’s brand and identity.
