What is lighting control?

In its simplest form, lighting control means switching the lights on and off. It’s something we’re all familiar with in our homes and in other spaces we visit or spend time in. In recent years, people have gotten used to smart lighting in indoors by seeing lighting automatically switch on or off when there’s movement in the room. This type of smart lighting has now found its way to outdoor lighting as well – and that’s what C2 SmartLight lighting control means: automatic, smart usage of outdoor lighting.

Why Lighting Control?

Good lighting is essential for orientation and safety. Good lighting makes environments inviting. It increases atmosphere and can even have impact on a city’s attractiveness and tourism. Quite often we don’t think about the lighting in our cities – unless, of course, there’s a broken light, there’s too much light, or no light.

Lighting control not only automatizes the switch on/off rhythm of the lighting, but it also enables optimizing the amount of light illuminated. With lighting control systems, you can adjust the lighting levels – even luminaire-specifically – in accordance to e.g. weather or traffic conditions, presence of pedestrians or cyclists, and for example make possible different kind of “one-time” lighting needs, such as switching the lights off for the Earth Hour. Lighting control also provides means to manage the lighting network remotely in real time by transmitting alarms and providing data of the energy usage etc., which significantly eases the maintenance.

I thought it was about the energy savings

It’s absolutely true, that lighting control systems are employed to gain energy savings. Lighting can present one third of  the electricity usage of a city [1], so most people would agree it would be dumb not to reduce the costs when it’s possible.

Lighting control alone can easily reduce the energy consumption of the lighting by 40%, but when combined with led luminaires, the savings can amount to 90% for certain environments.

Thus, the return time of the investment is fast.


Lighting control reduces energy-related CO2 emissions annually by millions of kilos. [2] Generating 1 kWh of electricity creates 200g of CO2 emissions [3]. You could say, every kWh counts.
