Saving energy and the environment – the HINKU city Nurmes smartly modernizes its lighting.

City of Nurmes

The city of Nurmes, which has been a customer of C2 SmartLight Oy since 2012, chose the rental model in order to modernize its lighting without large one-time investments. This solution has enabled significant, up to 60-70% savings in energy consumption and maintenance costs in renovated areas. As part of the finnish HINKU city network, Nurmes is moving towards carbon neutrality by expanding smart lighting solutions throughout the city, from street lighting to exercise trails and PielisAreena.

Cooperation with C2 SmartLight since 2012
The city of Nurmes has been a customer of C2 SmartLight since 2012. The city decided to renew its lighting in a modern and cost-effective way and chose the rental model. "We have cooperated closely and are satisfied with the solution we chose," says Ville Halonen, a building technology expert from the city of Nurmes, who is also responsible for outdoor lighting.

The rental model enabled a flexible and predictable solution
Nurmes has chosen a rental model that offers the city the opportunity to update the lighting without large one-time investments. The rental model guarantees a clear and predictable monthly cost, which facilitates budgeting and financial planning. "The rental model turned out to be an economically attractive and flexible solution for us," explains Halonen.

Nurmes has implemented several renovation projects through the rental model. The city's street lighting has been modernized with new energy-efficient led lights, an intelligent control system and luminaire-specific control that adjusts the lighting as needed. These solutions have led to significant savings in energy consumption and maintenance costs. "We have reduced energy consumption and maintenance costs by up to 60-70% in renovated areas," says Halonen with satisfaction.

The renovation of the ice hockey arena’s lighting has been particularly praised, as it not only improved energy efficiency but also boosted the city’s enthusiasm for hockey. ‘The renovated ice hockey arena has been a great source of joy, bringing new energy to both events and the city’s hockey culture,’ Halonen describes.

Nurmes is a HINKU city
Nurmes is also part of the finnish HINKU city network, i.e. committed to carbon neutrality goals. Smart lighting solutions and significant energy savings support the city's goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Ville Halonen states: "It has been great to share reports that concretely show how much we have reduced energy consumption and emissions in terms of lighting."

The next steps in lighting reform
Nurmes is currently expanding smart lighting to new sports venues and PielisAreena. "Our goal is to continue using energy-efficient and modern lighting solutions throughout the city," says Halonen about future plans.
